The Waterloo Region is often referred to as the Silicon Valley of the North, with it's startup culture making it a city known for innovation.

The city is located in the heart of Canada's Technology Triangle and is home to hundreds of high-tech firms including BlackBerry. Waterloo is home to three major think tanks fostering innovation:

  1. The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics: an independent research centre in foundational theoretical physics also providing scientific training and educational outreach activities.
  2. The Institute for Quantum Computing: an affiliate scientific research institute of the University of Waterloo which hosts academic conferences and workshops, in addition to theoretical and experimental research.
  3. The Centre for International Governance Innovation: an independent think tank supporting research on global governance while collaborating with policy, business, and academic communities around the world.


Two of Canada's highest ranking universities, the University of Waterloo and Wilfred Laurier University, reside in Waterloo.

The city attracts students and young professionals with more than 50,000 students attending one of the two universities in the city. The lively city has one of the youngest populations in Canada, and as a result has no shortage of entertainment and nightlife for those who are looking for fun! Uptown Waterloo is a thriving urban center with award-winning architecture and amazing shops. As well, the city has a vibrant restaurant scene and features many places that host live music and entertainment.


There's plenty to do in Waterloo with the perfect balance of being an urban core while maintaining small town charm through unique local experiences.

For a quick shopping trip, head to Conestoga Mall which is home to more than 130 shops and services. For local goods, you'll want to visit St. Jacob's Farmer's Market for a variety of items from food, to art, collectibles, flowers and more!
