Elmira is the largest community in the Township of Woolwich.
As a part of the Waterloo region, Elmira has one of the largest populations of Mennonites in Canada. You will often see the population of Old Order Mennonites on the local roads using traditional horse and buggy transportation. Each spring, tens of thousands of people are known to gather in Elmira for their annual Elmira Maple Syrup Festival. The event features sugar bush tours, a half-mile long outdoor mall with local vendors, a craft show, a maple syrup contest, and of course pancakes with golden maple syrup! The festival brings the community together, gathering volunteers and attendees, with all of the efforts and proceeds going towards supporting local charities.
