15 Things to Do in Guelph That Locals Actually Enjoy

Looking for Things to Do in Guelph?

You do not have to be visiting Guelph to explore it like a tourist.

Some of the best parts of the city are places locals pass every day, which means it is surprisingly easy to forget how much there is to do close to home.

Whether you have recently moved to Guelph, have lived here for years or are visiting for the weekend, here are 15 ways to spend a day in the Royal City.

1. Walk the Eramosa River Trail

This is one of those simple Guelph activities that never really gets old.

Follow the river, pass the Covered Bridge and enjoy one of the city's prettiest stretches of trail.

Go early on a quiet morning and it can feel surprisingly removed from the city.

2. Spend a Saturday Morning at the Guelph Farmers' Market

There is something about a farmers' market that tells you a lot about a community.

The Guelph Farmers' Market has long been part of the city's Saturday routine, bringing together produce, prepared foods and local vendors near downtown.

Make a morning of it and grab coffee or breakfast nearby afterward.

3. Explore the Arboretum

The Arboretum at the University of Guelph is one of the city's best places for a walk.

Different gardens, wooded areas and trails make it worth returning throughout the year.

Fall gets plenty of attention, but spring blooms and quiet winter walks deserve some credit too.

4. Spend an Afternoon at Riverside Park

Riverside Park is a Guelph classic.

Walking paths, river views, playground space and seasonal attractions make it easy to spend a few hours here, particularly with kids.

It is also one of those places that becomes part of family traditions over time.

5. Explore Downtown Guelph

Do not overthink this one.

Park the car and wander.

Explore the independent shops, stop for lunch, grab a coffee, look at the architecture and walk toward the river.

Sometimes the best way to appreciate your city is to stop rushing through it.

6. See the Basilica

The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Guelph.

Even if you have driven past it hundreds of times, seeing the building up close gives you a different appreciation for its architecture and its place in Guelph's skyline.

7. Walk Through Exhibition Park

Large mature trees give Exhibition Park a completely different feeling from newer city parks.

It is a favourite for walking, recreation and simply spending a slower afternoon outside.

The surrounding residential streets are worth wandering too if you appreciate Guelph's older architecture.

8. Follow the Speed River

Guelph's rivers are one of its defining features.

The trail network allows you to experience parts of the city you may never notice from the road.

Bring comfortable shoes and see where the path takes you.

9. Visit Guelph Lake

When you want more than a neighbourhood walk, head toward Guelph Lake Conservation Area.

Depending on the season, visitors come for hiking, paddling, swimming, picnics and camping.

It is close enough to the city that you do not need an elaborate plan to make a day of it.

10. Catch a Show at River Run Centre

Living in a smaller city does not mean giving up live entertainment.

River Run Centre sits downtown beside the Speed River and hosts performances throughout the year.

Dinner downtown followed by a show makes for an easy local night out.

11. Discover Preservation Park

If you live in the south end and have never properly explored Preservation Park, consider this your reminder.

The natural area has wooded trails and wetlands that feel worlds away from the busy commercial areas nearby.

12. Take a Short Drive to Rockwood

Rockwood Conservation Area is close enough for an easy day trip and dramatically different from Guelph's city parks.

Cliffs, water, trails and historic features make Rockwood particularly beautiful during the fall.

13. Have a Picnic at Royal City Park

Royal City Park sits beside the Speed River close to downtown.

Pick up lunch from a local restaurant and eat outside by the river.

Simple plans are sometimes the best ones.

14. Experience Guelph in Winter

Do not abandon the outdoors when the temperature drops.

Outdoor skating, neighbourhood rinks, winter trails and tobogganing give the city an entirely different personality during the colder months.

15. Explore a Neighbourhood You Do Not Live In

This may sound strange, but it is one of the best ways to discover Guelph.

Walk through St. George's Park.

Explore the streets around Exhibition Park.

Head into the Ward.

Walk through Westminster Woods or along the trails in the east end.

You start noticing the little differences between communities that you never see when you are simply driving through.

And that is one of the things we love about Guelph.

It is not a city with one single attraction that defines it.

It is a collection of neighbourhoods, parks, trails, businesses and community spaces that become more interesting the longer you live here.
