Clocks Fell Back: A Home Safety Check

Daylight saving time ended on Sunday, November 1, and the darker evenings are a good reminder to run through a simple safety check.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Test them and replace batteries. Check the expiry date on each unit, since alarms don't last forever.

Exterior lighting. Shorter days mean more time in the dark. Motion sensor lights and well-lit entrances improve safety and curb appeal.

Fire extinguisher. Make sure it's accessible and still in working condition.

Fireplace and chimney. If you use a wood-burning fireplace, have it inspected and cleaned.

Emergency kit. Flashlights, batteries, blankets, and some non-perishable food are smart to have ready before winter storms.

If you're buying a home, these items are worth asking about during the inspection too. Good safety basics are part of what makes a house a home.
